7 Tips to Avoid Online Scams

Internet scams and fraud are on the rise, and we must be vigilant. Our Internet browsing habits frequently expose us to online fraud and scams, which can expose our net banking, financial transactions, and sensitive financial data to hackers. Check out these seven tips for avoiding online scams.

1. Read the site’s privacy policies

Privacy policies, though lengthy and complex, explain how the site safeguards the personal information it collects. Consider doing business elsewhere if you cannot see or understand a site’s privacy policy.

2. Shop safely

Before you shop online, make sure the website uses secure technology. When you get to the checkout page, make sure the web address starts with https. Also, look for a tiny locked padlock symbol on the page.

3. Secure your internet connection

Always use a password to protect your home wireless network. When connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, be cautious about the information you send over it.

4. Keep personal information personal

Hackers can use social media profiles to guess your passwords and answer security questions in password reset tools. Lock down your privacy settings and avoid posting things like birthdays, addresses, mother’s maiden name, and so on. Be wary of requests to connect from people you don’t know.

5. Watch out for phishing scams

Phishing scams use fraudulent emails and websites to trick users into disclosing private account or login information. Do not click on links or open attachments or pop-up windows from unknown sources. Forward phishing emails to the company, bank, or organisation impersonated in the email.

6. Set strong passwords

A strong password is at least eight characters long and contains a combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.

7. Keep your computers and mobile devices up to date

The best defence against viruses, malware, and other online threats is to use the most recent security software, web browser, and operating system. Enable automatic updates to receive the most recent fixes as they become available.
